It was larger than I expected, so I can steam enough for several people at once.

Steaming beats boiling everything, and I'm reluctant to over-rely on the microwave, so I bought this. Compared with the seiro I used before, the aroma is lovely. I'd love to see a size smaller in the lineup.

The artisans' craftsmanship sealed the purchase. It's great being able to fit plenty of ingredients at once.

Experience

Steaming becomes a moment worth savoring

Tashinam’s Japanese hinoki seiro is a masterpiece, uncompromising in materials, cooking performance, and craftsmanship.

The beauty of domestic timber woven from Japanese hinoki cypress and yamazakura cherry; hinoki’s humidity control that steams food to plump perfection; and the careful handwork of Gifu artisans.

Together, they turn the simple act of steaming into an experience filled with aroma and delight.

1. Generous use of Japanese materials

A masterpiece made generously from Japanese materials: hinoki cypress and yamazakura cherry

The Tashinam Japanese hinoki seiro stands apart from the common Chinese-made bamboo seiro.

It combines Japanese timber and is made by bentwood artisans in Gifu Prefecture.

The body is made of Japanese hinoki cypress — fine-grained, dense, and highly durable. The wood settles in beautifully with use, a material you can cherish across generations.

A once-in-a-lifetime seiro, possible only by hand

Premium Japanese hinoki, used generously

Hinoki is the finest wood used for seiro, superior in durability, water resistance, and antibacterial properties.

With its dense grain and high water resistance, proper care will keep it in service for many years.

At the same time, hinoki’s dense fibers make it difficult to work — a beautiful bentwood finish is impossible without a master artisan’s skill. That is precisely why it is rare, and valuable.

For the binding that supports the structure, we use robust, red-tinged yamazakura cherry wood, uniting strength and design.

By giving each material its own role, we pursue the completeness of a single work of craft — not just a cooking tool. (* The bamboo used in the lid mesh is sourced from China.)

2. Why steaming with hinoki changes the dish

Plump and fragrant — the exquisite steaming only hinoki delivers.

Hinoki’s greatest properties are its moisture control and low thermal conductivity.

Food doesn’t turn soggy; it steams up plump and tender, keeping its grain and fiber intact.

Fish, root vegetables, cuts of meat — even thick or fatty ingredients steam up tender and aromatic thanks to these properties.

Then there’s the moment you lift the lid: the fresh scent of hinoki that fills the air not only lifts the flavor of the food, it wraps the whole table in a special atmosphere.

Not mere cooking — the steaming itself becomes the experience.

A comparison with bamboo seiro makes the difference easy to see.

Where bamboo seiro are largely limited to flour-based dishes like dim sum and steamed buns, Tashinam’s Japanese hinoki seiro handles a wide range — fish, meat, root vegetables, dishes with thickness and fat.

And the pleasant hinoki aroma rising the moment you lift the lid elevates the dish and turns the table itself into a special experience.

3. A commitment to MADE IN JAPAN

Shaped one by one by Japanese bentwood artisans.

Tashinam’s Japanese hinoki seiro is crafted by master artisans using Japan’s bentwood techniques, best known from magewappa.

Bending the wood, shaving it, binding it with cherry bark — every step is done by hand, and a single piece demands enormous time and effort.

A seiro born this way brings gentle warmth and quiet presence to the kitchen.

With use, the wood grain settles, the aroma mellows, and it grows into a tool that lives alongside you.

STORY

Development story

What led me to found Tashinam was an encounter with Japanese magewappa.

The traditional craft of bending, binding, and shaping wood creates a supreme experience felt with all five senses.

Because it is made from rare materials — Japanese hinoki and yamazakura — and by careful artisan handwork, only about 100–200 sets can be sold per year. We hope you’ll see that scarcity as part of its value.

SIZE

About the size

Width / depth: 240mm
Height: 150mm (lid + body)
Recommended steaming plate size: 27cm

Large enough for about three steamed buns — a good size for dishes serving 2–3 people.

For stable use with an aluminum steaming plate, we recommend the Hokuriku Alumi Chinese seiro stand, 27cm size.
(An aluminum steaming plate is not included and must be purchased separately.)

Likewise, choose a pot 1–2cm larger than the seiro.
